Membership in the Investigative News Network is open to nonprofit or fiscally sponsored news projects that comply with INN membership guidelines.
Membership connects you with a growing community of news organizations working at the cutting edge of investigative journalism practice and sustainability. Members enjoy free and discounted services and programs, and become an integral part of a local, regional, national and international network of professional news organizations.
Here are some of the many reasons to join INN:
INN offers free website hosting and development for members through Project Largo, our open-source WordPress platform. In addition, we offer frequent online training and peer group facilitation in digital media best practices as well as one-on-one technical advice and consulting on topics such as digital strategy, website development and vendor selection.
Revenue Generation and Cost-Savings Opportunities
INN members can participate in potential revenue and cost-saving opportunities negotiated by INN, including grant offerings, partnerships and selling articles to third-party news publishers.
Members can drive traffic and increase impact by sharing and collaborating on content of all sorts. This includes republishing, redistribution, localization and shared content development. Additionally, The Investigative News Network and Investigative Reporters and Editors have teamed up to offer dedicated data-analysis services through our shared Director of Data Services position.
INN offers fiscal sponsorships to start-up member projects that operate within the rules of 501(c)(3), are consistent with our mission to inform the citizenry with investigative and public-service journalism, and which are only just now beginning the time-consuming, expensive and confusing process of applying for 501(c)(3) status.
Third-Party Resources: Software, Insurance, Legal Advice
INN leverages the size of the network to negotiate preferred pricing and provide affordable, subsidized and/or free insurance, legal advice, and software toolsets to our members.
Marketing and Public Relations
INN promotes member content and activity through newsletters and social media as well as through syndication tools such as our Project Largo WordPress platform and external networks such as NewsTex.
Networking & Information Resources
INN members can connect with other members, journalists and thought leaders in the nonprofit news sector using our member directory. They also receive updates on member projects, training and education opportunities, job openings and events through our weekly member newsletter. INN also stages and supports in-person and online journalism events focused on skill development, technology and networking.
